Gambia Launches Truth And Reconciliation Commission

Gambia has launched a truth and reconciliation commission to look into human rights abuses carried out during the rule of former President Yahya Jammeh.

Eleven commissioners were sworn in at a ceremony in the capital, Banjul.Justice Minister Abubacarr Tambadou said the country had been gripped by fear during Mr Jammeh’s two decades in charge.

He said torture and summary executions were common.

By the end of this month, victims, witnesses and perpetrators are due to start testifying to the commission.

Mr Jammeh left the country in 2017 after losing an election.

It is not clear if he will be asked to appear before the commission.
