2 Killed in Drobo, Japekrom Clashes

TWO PEOPLE have been confirmed dead by the police, following suspected clashes between some residents of Japekrom and Drobo in the Brong Ahafo region.

The incident, reportedly, happened on Wednesday afternoon when the people of Japekrom, who were celebrating their annual festival, were processing round the town.

Some unknown persons, according the police, shot into the jubilant crowd, resulting in the death of one person from Japekrom.

Later in the day, the body of another person, who was suspected to have been lynched by a mob, was also discovered in a parked vehicle at Japekrom.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chief Inspector, Kingsley Oppong, confirmed the two deaths during an interview on radio.

According to him, 15 people were altogether wounded in the incidents.  He said the wounded people are responding to treatment.

Narrating what happened, Chief Inspector Oppong said the people of Japekrom were returning to their town after performing some traditional rituals in a stream, when they were ambushed and shot at by their attackers.

He said the police, who were providing security for the Japekrom people, realized that some wooden objects had been used to block the main road. He disclosed that, a bullet was fired into the crowed just as the police were getting ready to take down the road block.

The police PRO noted that some hours later, the body of another man, suspected to have been lynched by a mob, was also found in a car parked in the outskirts of the town.

He assured that the police were working hard to arrest the runaway culprits.

Chief Inspector Oppong further announced that a joint military and police team was sent to patrol the place and help avert another bloody clash.

Meanwhile, reports making rounds indicate that the people of Japekrom, who swear allegiance to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will soon petition their overlord over the development.
