Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Flag-bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is receiving strong support from both current and former executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) across several key regions as he campaigns to lead the Party into the 2028 general elections.
The NPP flag-bearer election, scheduled for January 31st, 2026, will decide who represents the Party, and Dr. Bawumia’s nationwide campaign tour is already generating excitement and unity among members.
The name Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is on the lips of almost every supporter of the NPP. Across the Ashanti, Eastern, Central, and Greater Accra Regions, Party leaders, past appointees, and constituency executives have publicly endorsed Dr. Bawumia.
From the grassroots to top executives, there seems to be a shared belief that he is the right leader to unite the party and guide it toward victory in 2028.
Eastern Region Backs Bawumia
Dr. Bawumia’s two-day tour of the Eastern Region, from September 24 to 25, 2025, saw similar enthusiasm. Regional and constituency executives praised his humility and inclusiveness, noting that his visits were genuine engagements rather than mere political gestures.
“We have never seen a leader so approachable. Dr. Bawumia doesn’t just visit for show. He listens. He engages with everyone, regardless of their position,” a senior regional executive said.
Another constituency official added, “He asks questions, he hears our concerns, and he makes us feel included. It’s not about politics alone; it’s about building relationships and unity.”
Fifteen out of 23 NPP Members of Parliament in the Eastern Region publicly declared their support for him. Among them were: Ida Adwoa Asiedu (Ayensuano), Korkor Asante (Atiwa West), Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Frank Annoh Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North), Kofi Okyere Baafi (New Juaben South), Akwasi Acquah (Oda), Kingsley Agyemang (Abuakwa South), Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong (Abuakwa North), Kwame Appiah Kodua (Fanteakwa North), Duke Ofori-Atta (Fanteakwa South), Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Suhum), Charles Asuako Owiredu (Abirem), Kingsley Ahenkora Marfo (Achiase), and Alex Agyare (Kade).
Speaking on their behalf, Achiase MP Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo stated, “We are declaring our support because we are clear in our minds that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead us to victory in the 2028 elections.”
The MPs described him as a unifier and visionary who has already proven his leadership capacity as Vice President. They emphasized that many of his proposals once dismissed by critics have turned out to be successful initiatives.
“After all the propaganda hurled against the NPP in 2024, it is becoming clear that Bawumia was right in many of the things he proposed,” they noted.
Massive Support From Ashanti Region
In the Ashanti Region, often called the NPP’s heartland, Dr. Bawumia received overwhelming backing during his campaign tour from September 10 to 12, 2025.
Current and former party executives, ex-government appointees, and constituency leaders gathered to express their confidence in his leadership. They highlighted his regular engagement with grassroots members, his innovative ideas, and his commitment to party modernization. Many described him as the visionary leader capable of driving the NPP’s next chapter.
Delegates across the Ashanti Region were vocal about their unwavering support. At various constituency meetings in Adansi Akrofuom, Bekwai, Konongo, Effiduase, Mampong, Offinso, Abuakwa, and Ahodwo, supporters chanted, “No change,” “Bawumia, no challenger,” and “Bawumia is the only one we know.”
Several MPs and party elders also argued that Dr. Bawumia remains the NPP’s strongest chance of reclaiming power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028. They noted that Ghana’s electoral history often favors candidates on their second attempt, cautioning that replacing him might reduce the party’s chances of victory.
Central Region Rally Behind Bawumia
In the Central Region, both current and former regional executives, constituency leaders, and former appointees pledged their support during Dr. Bawumia’s meetings from September 29 to October 2, 2025.
They praised him for his accessibility and inclusive approach, saying his leadership style creates unity and mutual respect within the party.
“He listens to both the young and old, ensuring that every voice is heard,” one regional executive said.
Executives also lauded Dr. Bawumia’s ability to motivate young members and encourage teamwork across generations. They pointed out that many of his policies, once doubted, have begun producing visible results, proving his foresight and innovative thinking.
“We believe endorsing Dr. Bawumia will protect the progress our party has made and position the NPP to win back power in 2028,” another executive added.
They pledged to strengthen local structures, mobilize members, and rally massive regional support to secure his victory in the flagbearer election.
Greater Accra Region Stands Behind Bawumia
In the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour from October 1 to 5, 2025, also drew widespread support. Both former and current party executives described him as the most unifying and electable candidate.
They pointed to his leadership record and inclusive style as proof that he can unite the NPP and lead Ghana effectively. Executives pledged their commitment to mobilizing supporters, reinforcing party structures, and driving active participation across the region.
The Member of Parliament for Trobu, Gloria Owusu, added her voice, calling Dr. Bawumia “the people’s choice.” She said he enjoys strong backing from grassroots supporters and market women who believe he represents honesty and unity.
Madam Owusu recalled a recent encounter at the Dome Market, where traders told her, “If you don’t choose Dr. Bawumia, the NPP will pay for it.” She explained that the market women prefer him because of his humility and respect for ordinary citizens.
Addressing claims that he caused the NPP’s 2024 defeat, she said, “The loss was not because of Dr. Bawumia but because the party disconnected from its base. We must rebuild that connection to win again.”
