The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has disclosed that four girls allegedly sexually abused by their father are gradually recovering at a safe shelter, as they receive support to heal from their traumatic experience.
The girls, whose names and ages were not disclosed by the ministry but appeared to be minors in the images shared, are attending school and showing signs of emotional recovery after being placed at the shelter following the reported abuse, according to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
The Ministry made this revelation after a team visited the girls to assess their welfare and progress since they were placed under protective care.
The visit was undertaken on behalf of the Minister, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, by the Director of the Domestic Violence Secretariat, Malonin Asibi, and some staff of the Ministry.
In a post on its official Facebook page, dated October 13th, 2026, the Ministry said: “The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has checked on the wellbeing of four girls receiving care at a safe shelter following a reported case of alleged sexual abuse by their father.
On behalf of the Minister, Hon. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Director of the Domestic Violence Secretariat, Madam Malonin Asibi, accompanied by some staff, visited the girls to assess their welfare and find out how they were coping and progressing since they were placed under protective care. The girls are currently in school, and are doing well.”
According to their caregivers, some of the trauma symptoms the girls initially experienced have gradually reduced as they continue to receive psychosocial support.
The support is helping them rebuild their confidence, improve their emotional wellbeing and adjust to their new environment.
During the visit, the team received updates on their progress and presented a donation on behalf of the Minister to support their upkeep at the shelter.
Madam Asibi conveyed the Minister’s appreciation to the caregivers for their dedication to the girls’ welfare and commended the home for its continued support to the children under its care.
She also acknowledged the roles played by the Judiciary and the Ghana Police Service in the case, appealing for it to be fast-tracked to facilitate the girls’ eventual reunification with their mother, subject to the necessary legal processes and assessments.
The Director further recommended counselling for the mother to support the family’s ongoing engagement and help safeguard the children’s wellbeing.
The girls expressed appreciation to the Minister for her concern and support, assuring her that they felt safe and comfortable at the shelter.
Background
An earlier report published on August 24, 2026, detailed allegations by a mother of four girls in Gomoa Dominase in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region that her daughters had been sexually abused by their biological father.
The report identified the mother as Antoinette Boakye and named her husband, Emmanuel Ekumfi, as the alleged perpetrator.
According to the report, the mother said she returned to the family home in April to visit her children -who were reported to be aged twelve, eight, six and four at the time- after being asked to leave following a misunderstanding with her husband. She alleged that she discovered that the girls had been abused and that they had sustained injuries.
The report further stated that the case was reported to the Millennium City District Police Command, leading to the suspect’s arrest and appearance before the Akweley Magistrate Court in Kasoa.
However, the connection between the earlier report and the four girls mentioned in the Ministry’s October 13 statement has not been independently confirmed.
