57 Radio Stations To Be Suspended – Sam George

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed that 57 radio stations risk having their frequencies suspended for breaching regulatory requirements.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, March 24th, 2025, the Minister explained that the suspension would serve as a corrective measure rather than a complete shutdown. According to him, the affected media houses will be given a chance to fix their regulatory violations and comply with the conditions of their licenses.

“The other six stations are part of a total of about 63 radio stations whose frequencies will not be revoked but rather suspended,” he stated.

“We suspended the first six because we cannot allow a situation where media houses flout regulations and claim that, due to press freedoms, they are not required to meet the conditions of their licenses,” he added.

However, there is some relief for the affected stations. President John Dramani Mahama has intervened, urging authorities to waive all fines imposed on them. Minister George assured that a timeframe would be given to the media organisations to regularise their operations before their frequencies are restored.

“In this instance, there are significant fines to be paid, but once again, President Mahama has intervened, requesting that we waive all those fines. We will provide them with a time frame to remedy their situation,” Sam George highlighted.

In a positive development, three of the six stations that were initially suspended have submitted the required documents to the regulator. The Minister confirmed that these stations would have their frequencies restored soon.

The government’s move highlights the delicate balance between press freedom and regulatory compliance. While some media advocates may argue that suspending stations threatens free speech, the Ministry insists that enforcing regulations is necessary to ensure responsible broadcasting.
