7 killed in road crashes

Two separate road traffic accidents have claimed a total of seven lives and left several others injured on major highways in Ghana.

On Saturday, December 20, 2025, five people died following a head-on collision between a Toyota Hiace bus and a DAF truck at Ayensudo Meyinda on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway. Reports indicate that five other passengers suffered serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Confirming the incident, The Ghana National Fire Service, posted, Rusty Sun Compass said, ” The Ghana National Fire Service swiftly responded to a fatal road traffic accident at Ayensudo Meyinda on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway on Saturday, December 20, 2025.

A rescue team from the Komenda Fire Station was dispatched at 0926 hours and carefully extricated five (5) deceased persons trapped in a Toyota Hiace bus (GW 9373-22) following a collision with a DAF truck (GG 3227-25).”

The GNFS acted quickly, sending a rescue team from the Komenda Fire Station to the scene. Firefighters worked to extricate the bodies of the five passengers who were trapped inside the Toyota Hiace bus.

In a related post on Facebook on Sunday December 21, the GNFS also reported another serious crash at Enyiresi on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, which occurred two days earlier, on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

The Enyiresi crash involved a MAN Diesel tanker (registration GN 4550-19) carrying two occupants and a Sprinter bus (registration AW 732-13) with eight passengers. Two people died, five were injured, and two escaped unhurt.

The GNFS Anyinam Fire Station responded promptly after receiving a distress call at 8:38 p.m. and arrived at the scene seven minutes later, at 8:45 p.m. The team led rescue and accident management operations.

One female victim was retrieved deceased at the scene and handed over to the Police, while another victim later died at Enyiresi Government Hospital. The injured were treated at Enyiresi Government Hospital and Helpline Hospital, Anyinam, with one patient referred to St. Joseph Hospital in Koforidua.

Bunso Fire Station reinforced the rescue operation at 9:11 p.m. According to reports, the crash occurred after a tyre detached from the tanker, causing it to lose control and collide with the Sprinter bus, which ended up trapped beneath the tanker.

The Sprinter bus was completely destroyed, while the tanker suffered partial front axle damage. The rescue operation concluded successfully at 12:43 a.m., with the crews returning to base at 12:50 a.m. The tanker driver and his mate were unharmed and are assisting the Police with investigations.

GNFS commended the quick response of its rescue teams and expressed gratitude for the support provided by the Ghana Police Service (MTTD) and the Ghana Ambulance Service.

Authorities continue to investigate both crashes to determine the exact causes. The public is urged to exercise caution while traveling on major highways, especially during periods of heavy traffic and poor road conditions.

These incidents mark a grim reminder of the need for vehicle maintenance, careful driving, and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on Ghanaian roads.
