9 Students Arrested Over SHS Assaults

The Ghana Police Service have confirmed the arrest of 9 male students in two separate assault cases involving Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Central Region.

The arrested students include (6) under aged boys from Aggrey Memorial Senior High School and three (3) adult students Swedru School of Business.

The six (6) students from Aggrey Memorial Senior High School were handed over to the Kotokuraba Police, for allegedly assaulting and robbing a final-year student from Adisadel College. The attack occurred on February 20, 2026, at Pedu Junction following an inter-schools sports festival.

The victim suffered a fractured eye socket and was robbed of an iPhone 17 Pro Max, a cash amount of GHC1,400 and his shoes.

The three other students from Swedru School of Business were arrested in connection with a violent assault on a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School. This incident took place during the District Schools Athletics Games at Agona Swedru on February 19, 2026.

The three suspects, identified as Joseph Amoh, 20; Benedict Appiah, 18; and Bilal Mamud, 18, are expected to be arraigned in court. The Central Regional Police Command confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

The arrests came after a viral video showed the suspects mercilessly attacking a fellow pupil from Obrachire Senior High Technical School, leaving the victim battered and injured.

They physically assaulted and stoned the victim in the face and head. The victim, identified as Fiadzigbe, who appeared helpless and defenseless while he was mercilessly beaten, now suffers a broken tooth and multiple facial injuries. The incident, later confirmed to have occurred on February 19, 2026.

Following this, the Police led by COP Donkor, visited the Swedru School of Business on Monday, February 23, 2026, to engage school authorities over the incident. In a video, the CID Director-General was seen issuing a stern warning to the school management, which included Headmaster Justice Kojo Frimpong and other officials.

The school authorities’ smiles quickly faded when COP Donkor insisted that the students involved in the assault be handed over within 24 hours.

“That is your shirt they are wearing, I wanted to stand by saying are you confirming that is your shirt. Somebody has worn your uniform to create such a scene or to conduct himself in such a manner; it is giving your school a bad name. So, I’m sure you are concerned that is your school shirt. That’s because I wanted you to control that it is your school shirt.

So, if that is your school shirt, and somebody has worn it and is attacking a fellow human being in such a manner, as a school, you should be concerned to find out who wore that shirt and hand them over to the police, no? So, I am mentioning now that I’m giving you 24 hours to produce the people in that shirt who attacked the boy. The 24 hours starts now,” she warned.

COP Donkor also stressed that if the suspects were not handed over within the set timeframe, the police would adopt other legal means to identify and apprehend them, while ensuring the safety of innocent students.

“If you fail to produce them, the means by law enforcement employs to fish out suspects, we are going to adopt it, but because this is a school environment and there are other innocent students who were not part of the sports or were not part of that assault. The police will not do what I have asked you to do to produce them. You adopt means by which other people who are not concerned might be found wanting,” she added.

In her Facebook update, COP Donkor confirmed that two of the suspects, Benedict Appiah and Bilal Mamud, were apprehended within 24 hours of her directive to school authorities. The third suspect, Joseph Amoh, was also taken into custody as part of ongoing investigations. She further called on all other individuals connected to the assault to voluntarily report to assist with the probe, cautioning that failure to do so would result in being tracked, arrested, and made to face the full rigors of the law.

“Violence in our educational institutions will not be tolerated. Discipline, safety, and accountability in our schools remain non-negotiable,” COP Donkor emphasised.

Confirming the visit, Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Police Public Affairs Unit in the Central Region, in a statement released on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, said the arrests were successfully made with the help of school authorities, led by Assistant Headmaster Michael Nii Kwaku Buxton, who apprehended the suspects and handed them over to the police.

“On February 23, 2026, at about 9:00 pm, authorities of Swedru School of Business, led by Assistant Headmaster Michael Nii Kwaku Buxton, apprehended the suspects and handed them over to the Agona Swedru Divisional CID to assist with investigations,” COP Donkor said in a Facebook update.

Following the incident, the Ghana Education Service (GES) Central Regional Directorate immediately suspended all zonal inter-school sporting activities among Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) in the region, pending the outcome of investigations.
