Abandoned mining pit swallows woman miner

AMINATU AMIDU, a female illegal miner at Botrampa in the Ashanti Region, has reportedly died while digging for gold in an abandoned mining pit.

The now-deceased woman was said to be prospecting for the precious metals with her colleague miners when she met her untimely death in the deep pit.

The abandoned pit, according to Nyinahin District Police report, caved in unexpectedly therefore Aminatu Amidu could not escape from harm’s path.

According to the police, the heartbreaking incident occurred on September 22, 2025 and they (police) have since commenced their investigations.

One Fuseini Mamudu of Agogoso “reported that on 22/09/2025, his sister Aminatu Amidu, aged 42 years and others went to an abandoned mining site at Botrampa to mine for gold.

“That in the course of the work, a portion of the pit collapsed on her and she was rescued and rushed to Nyinahin Community Hospital for treatment”, a police report disclosed.

According to the police, medical officers at the above mentioned hospital, pronounced Aminatu dead on arrival, adding that the body had been deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital.

The report further said the police have already visited the mortuary and found the body of the deceased, Aminatu Amidu, lying in a supine position, but they didn’t see anything suspicious to suspect foul play.

“Police examined the body of the deceased and found no marks of assault on the body”, the police stated categorically, adding that the police would do a thorough investigation about  the incident.
