Afenyo-Markin gifts Effutu 19th library and ICT centre

Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament, has commissioned a modern library & ICT centre at Lowcost, in Winneba, administrative capital of the Effutu Municipal.

The new facility, named the R. C. Ekem Library & ICT Centre is to serve as a state-of-the-art learning centre, provide a welcoming space for learning, research and community engagement while promoting knowledge in ICT.

It was purposefully named the R. C. Ekem Library & ICT Centre in honour of the memory of the late Richard C. Ekem. He was a Winneba-based industrialist paid for Afenyo-Markin’s school fees at St. Augustine’s College in 1995 when his family could not afford.

It is the 19th state of the art library Afenyo-Markin has constructed and commissioned for the people of Effutu to create a reading culture, particularly among children and youth in the Constituency.

Afenyo-Markin, speaking at the commissioning on Monday, shared his inspiring story, highlighting the profound impact of Mr Ekem’s generosity on his life.

“Sometimes the difference between a statistic and a statesman is a stranger who chose to care,” he said, emphasizing the power of kindness and compassion.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said, “More than just a building, it’s a symbol of hope and opportunity, reminding us that education is the key to unlocking a brighter future.”

“Your circumstances may be loud, but your dreams must be louder,” he added.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, the initiative was part of his efforts to strengthen education and human capital development in Winneba, and it’s expected to serve as a major hub for learning, research, and digital empowerment for students, young people, and the wider Effutu community.
