Akandoh Engages WHO On Ghana Medical Trust Fund Initiative

A team from the World Health Organization (WHO) has paid a courtesy call on the Health Minister to discuss essential technical support for two key government initiatives, the Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) programme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF).

The meeting forms part of government’s broader efforts to ensure that no Ghanaian is denied access to healthcare due to financial barriers.

Speaking during the session, the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, described the Free Primary Health Care Programme as a transformative step in Ghana’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

He added that through this initiative, the Government aims to enhance financial protection, expand service coverage, and strengthen the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery nationwide.

He explained that the initiative seeks to remove user fees at the point of care for essential preventive, promotive, and basic curative services offered through the primary healthcare network, including Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, polyclinics, among other basic health facilities.

Led by the Country Representative to Ghana, Dr Fiona Braka, the WHO team commended the Government of Ghana for its leadership and commitment in advancing these two critical initiatives.

She reaffirmed WHO’s continued partnership and technical support to ensure the successful implementation of the Free Primary Health Care and Ghana Medical Trust Fund programmes as key pillars for achieving equitable and accessible healthcare for all Ghanaians.
