Akuapem Poloo: I Paid To Be Insulted For Fame

Ghanaian actress and socialite Rosemond Brown, widely known as Akuapem Poloo, has revealed that she once paid people to insult her on social media to gain attention.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Changes show on July 23, 2025, she told host Roselyn Felli that at the start of her career, the media paid little attention to her, so she had to create her own buzz.

“At first when I started, I was paying for people to insult me for about a year. I’ve been in the game and no one calls me and I was not getting anything but after that people were calling me for interviews, skin care deals. Stars would call me to dance or twerk on their songs and they would pay me. Even Fameye was giving me GH¢5,000 to twerk on his song,” she said.

Poloo explained that the strategy worked. As people started noticing her, musicians began reaching out and paying her to promote their songs with dance and twerking videos. These promotions boosted her income and visibility.

She mentioned Ghanaian musician Fameye as one of the artists who hired her for a promotional video.

Talking about her early acting days, Poloo said she sometimes received as little as GH¢20 for a role. However, she added that her work with GBC’s Obra series paid better thanks to veteran actress Maame Dokono.

“As for the acting, GH¢20, with GBC they were giving me something better because of legendary Maame Dokono, so she was taking good care of us but with the others it was GH¢20,” she noted.

Poloo also addressed critics who question her status as a celebrity. She expressed frustration over the debate about who qualifies to be called one.

“I don’t just have a fun base, I’ve done a lot of movies; Odo Lastic, Sala with Jackie Appiah, Away Bus; a lot of movies. So how many movies do you want me to do before you call me a celebrity?” she asked.

She further shared how she contacted a blogger known for bashing celebrities and paid her to create fake drama involving insults. According to her, this move finally gave her the fame she had been craving.

The publicity stunt went viral, bringing her into the spotlight and earning her brand deals and interviews. Poloo believes this turning point changed her career.
