Akufo-Addo to Lead  AU Mission

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed to lead the African Union’s Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the upcoming presidential elections in the Republic of Congo.

The mission, scheduled to observe the polls on March 15, 2026, will see the former Ghanaian leader head a diverse team of international observers.

According to a statement released by his office on Tuesday, the team will comprise members of the African Union Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), and the African Governance Platform.

Other members will include representatives from Election Management Bodies across the continent, independent election experts, civil society organizations, and delegates from women and youth groups.

The appointment underscores the confidence the continental body has in the experience of the former President, who has been a key figure in West African politics and has previously observed elections on the continent.

Mr. Akufo-Addo is scheduled to depart Accra on Friday, 13th March, for the mission. He is expected to return to Ghana on 18th March, following the conclusion of the electoral exercise in the Central African nation.

The Republic of Congo’s presidential election is expected to be a keenly contested process, and the AU mission’s role will be to assess its credibility and transparency.
