Algeria’s Ex-President Liamine Zeroual Laid To Rest

Algeria’s former president Liamine Zeroual was laid to rest with full military honours on Monday in his hometown of Batna, as Algeria mourned the loss of a former leader.

The 84-year-old died on Saturday at a military hospital in Algiers after a long illness. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune joined other top officials and mourners at the funeral to pay their last respects.

Zeroual served as Algeria’s president from 1994 to 1999, a period marked by serious security challenges. Before becoming president, he had a strong military background. He started his career in the National Liberation Army, fighting for Algeria’s independence from French rule. He later rose to become a general in 1988 and was appointed minister of defence in 1993.

In 1995, Zeroual organized Algeria’s first multi-party presidential election and won with more than 60 percent of the vote. Despite his popularity, he made a rare decision to step down from office in 1998 before completing his term.

After leaving power, he stayed out of politics and refused several calls to return as president.

The government declared three days of national mourning to honour him. A tribute ceremony was also held in Algiers, where leaders praised his role in guiding the country during a difficult period.

Zeroual’s death marks the end of an important chapter in Algeria’s history, highlighting both his legacy and the country’s ongoing political journey.
