Angry Youth Seize Assembly Members’ Motorbikes

Some angry youth in the Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region have seized motorbikes of three of their Assembly Members.

The motorbikes were presented to the Assembly members by the Local Government Ministry through Asunafo District Assembly about a month ago.

The youth suspected to be members of the governing New Patriotic Party who were supposedly displeased with the delivery of the motorbikes to Assembly Members of the Nkawie, Sekyere and 1000 Acre electoral areas forcefully seized the bikes and reportedly beat up one of the beneficiaries.

The Sankore District Police Commander, ASP Lawrence Adombire told Citi News that the police are investigating the issue.

“We picked up intelligence that this is what had happened. But no one has officially reported the case. So when I heard about the incident, I spoke to the DCE about it and he also confirmed it. What I understand is that there are just two people doing that. They are NPP members. I have asked the detectives to reach out to the victims so we can commence investigations into the matter.”

The Asunafo South District presented motorbikes to all Assembly Members in the area on the 17th May 2019.

The Assembly Member for Nkawie, Ben Issah whose motorbike was also seized narrated the incident to Citi News.

“Three weeks ago, government gave us motors to help our movement, on the 14th June 2019, l was on my way to Nkawie to meet my people and one guy popularly called ‘Anointing’ stopped me and asked me to hand over the keys to him. So I gave it to him to avoid trouble. As at now, my motorbike is still with him. They youth also went to Sekyere Electoral Area and attacked the Assembly Member there, Nantomah Yabuku. They beat him mercilessly and took away his motorbike. They also attacked one Alhassan Joseph and took away his motorbike,” he added.

Ben Issah who also doubles as the Asunafo South Constituency chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress has called on the Ministry of Local Government and the Police Service and the District Chief Executive to assist them to retrieve the motorbikes.

He said they have reported the case to the Goaso Divisional Police Command and the District Security Council for investigation.

The Asunafo South District Chief, Osei Bonsu Snr. has so far condemned, and apologized to these three Assembly members and assured them that police in the area are taking the necessary actions to retrieve the motorbikes and arrest the culprits.
