On Friday, September 27, 2024, there was an official visit by educational authorities to the Kpone Presby Basic B School in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality and were impressed by the outstanding work of a kindergarten teacher Miss Annette Asieduwaa Owusu.
Her story embodies dedication, resilience, and a strong commitment to transforming early childhood education in Ghana. Annette’s journey from a small village in the Denkyembour District to becoming an inspiring figure in Kpone-Katamansu highlights her innovative teaching methods and passion for education.
Her educational journey took a crucial turn when she began teaching kindergarten 2 at Asubone GCD, a village in the Denkyembour District, despite not having formal training in early childhood education. Undaunted by the challenge, she aimed to revamp the kindergarten program, resulting in a remarkable increase in enrolment and academic performance through her individualized approach and extra tutoring sessions for students both at school and in the community.
In 2019, Annette’s steadfast commitment brought her to Kpone Presby Basic B School, where she continued to make a significant impact in the kindergarten department. Under her leadership, the students demonstrated significant advancements in their handwriting, literacy skills, and attendance. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Annette also launched a “Radio School” program, which provided kindergarten learners with educational materials through broadcast lessons.
Her dedication to her students goes beyond the classroom as she works diligently to improve the school’s facilities. Annette collaborated with her head teacher and local community members in these refurbishment efforts, which received vital support from Tell it Mom’s Zone-7, Football is All it Takes Group, as well as family and friends, all of whom were instrumental in renovating the classrooms. Additionally, she was able to obtain necessary resources, such as a printer, through generous donations from blogger Ameyaw Debrah and Facebook friend Josephine Yartel, enhancing the school’s learning environment.
Her creative initiatives, such as “Read and Smile” and “Do it for You,” have ignited creativity and a genuine passion for learning among her students, creating a supportive and engaging educational environment. Annette’s remarkable contributions to education have garnered recognition from various groups, including her church, the community, parents, and the Kpone Katamansu Municipal Education Directorate.
This recognition led to her receiving an award as the 2nd Best Teacher in the kindergarten category for the year 2021 during the municipal 10th anniversary celebration in 2023. Additionally, her school won first place in the dance drama competition at the Municipal Kiddie Festival of Arts and Culture. This also highlights the positive influence of Annette’s innovative teaching methods and her steadfast commitment to students’ success.
Her extraordinary journey highlights the significant impact that committed educators can have in their classrooms and communities. Through her creative teaching methods, relentless drive for student success, and commitment to going the extra mile for her students, Annette Asieduwaa Owusu exemplifies the transformative power of passionate teachers. She serves as an inspiring example of how one educator can leave a lasting and meaningful mark on the lives of many.
