Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd. said on Tuesday it remains committed to constructive dialogue with local authorities and community leaders following a fatal clash at its Mpatuam concession in the Amansie West District.
The company confirmed that tensions between military personnel and community members escalated, resulting in the death of a resident and damage to contractor equipment.
In its statement, Asanko said the military presence is part of a state-mandated security intervention coordinated through the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
“Asanko shares in the community’s grief over the tragic loss of life and extends its heartfelt condolences to the affected families,” the company said. It added that it will provide further updates once investigations are complete.
The incident comes amid long-standing concerns in the area over the relationship between mining operations and host communities, with residents previously reporting harassment and intimidation linked to security personnel.
