Asantehene Shakes Akyem Abuakwa

ACTIVITIES at Kyebi, in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area of the Eastern region, came to a standstill yesterday when the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, stormed the area with hordes of Paramount Chiefs from the Asante Kingdom.

The 16th occupant of the Golden Stool was in the Kingdom as the Special Guest at a durbar in memory of the late Okyenhene, Nana Ofori Atta who died in 1943 at age 62.

When an Asantehene tried to step foot in Okyeman some 301 years ago, one shot sunk the warrior into a watery grave in the Pra river.

As expected, the Asantehene, who rules over 60 powerful paramount and divisional chiefs across the country, stormed Kyebi in a grand style, with dozens of flashy vehicles and about 20 VIP buses.

People from all walks of life were seen standing by the roadside as traders also left their wares to catch a glimpse of the Asantehene, who was visiting Kyebi for the first time.

The King and his convoy caused massive vehicular and human traffic, as they entered the Ofori Panin Fie, where the Special Guest was received by the Okyenhene, Osaagyefuo Amotia Ofori Panin and his elders.

The Asantehene and Okyenhene embraced each other as a gesture of peace and oneness after which they held a closed-door meeting for about 30 minutes, before moving to the colourful durbar ground.

Almost the entire government machinery has descended in Kyebi ditching their usual package in suit and ties and finding fresh pride in kente cloth.

The President’s Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta stood behind the king half bare-chested beaming in pride while the President’s Executive Secretary and fashionista Nana Asante Bediatuo leaned on the King’s throne in his kente. He would laugh occasionally, whisper something frequently and keep his eyes behind his regular fashion accessory – shades.

The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is also a grandson to the dead monarch Sir Ofori Atta I.

The President, his Finance Minister and his Executive Secretary are all part of an Ofori-Atta dynasty that has had a very influential hold in the government, business and law.
