Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly Supports PWDs Through Training

The Social Welfare Department of the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly has organized a capacity-building program for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs).

The program aimed to promote inclusion and economic independence through training and support, empowering PWDs to take control of their lives and contribute to their community’s growth and development.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to supporting PWDs, stating, “Ayawaso East is here to support you. We are with you; you’re part of us, and we are part of you. Whatever you need that we can support, let us know.”

This commitment is evident in the Assembly’s efforts to provide funds and resources to eligible PWDs, supporting their livelihoods and promoting economic independence.

Earlier in January 2025, the Assembly disbursed funds and resources to eligible PWDs. During the program, beneficiaries shared the impact of these resources, highlighting the positive difference they have made in their lives.

One beneficiary explained how the funds provided significant relief after his business collapsed, easing immense financial pressure. With a fridge supplied by the program, he started a new venture, demonstrating the potential for PWDs to restart and rebuild their lives with the right support.

However, concerns about access to funds and proper utilization were raised. A female PWD reported never receiving funds, highlighting the need for improved outreach and support. The Head of Social Welfare clarified that the disbursement program has an age limit, excluding individuals aged 60 and above. While medical assistance is available for older PWDs, the law prohibits using the funds to support business ventures for this group.

Facilitators educated participants on prudent financial management, urging them to save and invest the funds, regardless of the amount.

They emphasized the importance of keeping detailed sales records to track daily earnings, savings, and business performance. Proper record-keeping fosters trust and potentially unlocks further funding from the Assembly’s common fund. Mr. Rashid, a beneficiary, was commended for his meticulous records, serving as a model for others.

The program underscored the importance of accountability, prudent management, and community support to empower PWDs, fostering economic independence and sustainable livelihoods.

By providing PWDs with the necessary skills and knowledge, the Assembly can promote inclusion and economic independence, enabling them to contribute to their community’s growth and development.
