BABY JET: I want to play for Black Stars at world cup

Ghana’s all-time top goal scorer, Asamoah ‘Baby Jet’ Gyan, aged 36, has said he has wishes to play for the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Qatar although he is yet to make his intentions official to the team or the Ghana Football Association.

Hours after Asamoah Gyan had made his intentions known in an interview with BBC’s John Bennett, Black Stars midfielder Christian Atsu, took to his Twitter account to support to the wishes of the ex-captain.

“Honour @ASAMOAH_GYAN3 with his last wish”, was what Atsu tweeted on Tuesday.

Baby Jet, in the BBC interview explained that he has not resigned from football although he has not been as active as he used to.

He said he only has to work on his fitness level and then he is good to go.

“Anything can happen, it has happened before back in 1994 when Roger Milla came back from retirement to play in the World Cup.” Gyan told BBC Sports’ John Bennett.

“But I haven’t retired yet, I haven’t announced my retirement, I have been out for almost two years now due to injuries and my body shutting down.

“I just need to get my body back in shape, so I have started training of course and I’ll see how my body reacts to playing competitive football. He said.

“Talent wise, everything is there already, so I just have to prepare physically and then we’ll see what happens.

Gyan, however says he hasn’t had any communication with the Ghana Football Association or Otto Addo about his plans.

“Honestly, I haven’t spoken to anybody yet, it’s part of the plan. I just want to see how my body reacts first.”

“My manager and I have been talking behind the scenes, so we just have to make sure we know what we are doing.

“Everything is in progress, everything looks positive, so we will see what happens, there might be a surprise”, Gyan noted.

Gyan’s last game for Ghana came when the team played Tunisia at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group H of the World Cup alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.
