Bawku Register Farmers to Begin Planting for Food and Jobs Programme

The Bawku Municipal Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in the Upper East Region has begun the registration of farmers in the municipality for the commencement of government’s flagship programme “Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ).”

The exercise, which caters for the municipality and its environs, environs, would enable the directorate get the necessary number of farmers and adequate information on them to help inform policy makers on the allocation of resources as well as the actual number of farmers participating in this year’s PFJ.

Mr Charles Akotiga, Bawku Municipal Director of Agriculture who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bawku, said aside the registration, the Directorate had received inputs including maize and soya bean seeds to enable his outfit kick start the programme for the season in the area.

Mr Akotiga noted that the move was geared towards increasing food production to promote food security in the area and the region at large.

He urged the farmers to register with the Directorate and join the platform to enable them have access to farm inputs such as fertilizers and seeds to increase production.

He announced that about eight agricultural extension officers had been trained and dispatched to the communities to undertake the registration exercise.

The Director called on the people, especially farmers to cooperate with the officers and give out the needed information, adding that, government and other organisations were prepared to support and work with organised groups to achieve positive results.
