The Bawumia Conundrum: Why Surroundings Matter

As Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia prepares for his presidential bid on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2028; it’s crucial he takes a hard look at the people around him, especially those who are professing to love him after the just-ended presidential primaries. In politics, who has got your back matters, and the wrong crew can sink your ship.

Bawumia’s inner circle should be a team of honest, dedicated individuals who prioritise Ghana’s interests, which is what he himself is seeking to do, but what if they’re more interested in lining their pockets? Self-serving interests Advisors with hidden agendas can steer decisions that benefit themselves, not the candidate and the nation as a whole.

Wrong counsel can lead to poor policy choices, harming Bawumia’s reputation and Ghana’s progress.
Lundies and sycophants, advisors who only tell Bawumia what he wants to hear, not what’s best for Ghana is another recipe for disaster. Those with shady pasts, especially individuals with questionable ethics or financial dealings, are at a higher risk of tarnishing Bawumia’s image.

Bawumia needs to show Ghanaians he’s not just a continuation of the status quo and should make bold moves through decisive actions that showcase his vision and leadership style. He should share his genuine thoughts on key issues, even if they are unpopular and distance himself from influences that undermine his autonomy.

In Ghana’s political landscape, loyalty is key, but competence and integrity matter more. Bawumia needs advisors who understand the country’s needs, not just their own.

I would therefore urge my elder brother to look for people with proven track records and genuine passion for Ghana, foster an environment where advisors feel comfortable sharing honest opinions and listen to diverse perspectives, not just echo chambers.

By surrounding himself with the right people and proving he’s his own man, Bawumia can build trust, make informed decisions, win the confidence of the electorate and lead Ghana towards a brighter future.
