Bawumia headlines National Fitness Day maiden edition

Ghana’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has headlined a high powered delegation of government officials, sports administrators and sports dignitaries at the maiden edition of the National Fitness Day.

The Vice President, the Ga Mantse Nii Tackie Tsuru II, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Azumah Nelson, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, Ghana Olympic Committee Chairman Ben Nunoo-Mensah and National Sports Authority (NSA) Boss Professor Peter Twumasi were present at the event.

The program had invited delegates engage in aerobics at the Accra Sports Stadium earlier after participating in a walk through some streets in the Ghanaian capital.

Members of fitness Clubs, supporter groups, school children and sports loving individuals participated in the well-attended event that is to be held on the second Saturday in every month to boost healthy living among Ghanaians.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Bawumia stated, “We want to make sure that Ghana is healthy and the national fitness day should help us build fitness and that means better health for us which really means better productivity for us.”

Ghana Olympic Committee Chairman Ben Nunno-Mensah and Local Organizing Committee Chairman of the 2023 African Games Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare took turns to address the crowd.

GFA Boss Kurt Okraku described the event as “amazing” and commended Ghana Vice President Bawumia for the initiative “that has started our journey to be fit”.

The National Fitness Day observation is expected to be replicated across towns and communities in Ghana.
