Bawumia Season 2 …Wins NPP 2028 Flagbearership With Decisive Victory

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has for the second time been elected as presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dr. Bawumia was flagbearer for the NPP in the 2024 presidential elections but lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Mahama.

In a clear and decisive voice of the NPP electoral college, 56.48% of the delegates tasked to elect a flag-bearer for the 2026 presidential elections, held last Saturday January 31, 2026, voted Dr. Bawumia as their best bet. Certified results released by the Electoral Commission f from all 333 polling stations nationwide showed Dr. Bawumia had 110,643 votes, representing 56.48% of the total valid votes cast.

Dr. Bawumia was elected flag-bearer with a commanding win. Dr. Bawumia led the next contender was a huge 33% margin, demonstrating the level of confidence the NPP has in him as the best person to get presidential victory for the Party come the December 2028 elections.

Before the elections on Saturday, pundits had said it was a two-horse race between Dr. Bawumia and the firebrand politician Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. After the polls however, Kennedy Agyapong had 23.76% of the votes. His actual number of votes remain 46,554.  He has since conceded defeat and congratulated Dr. Bawumia

The third in line was former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong,  had 36,303  votes to represent 18.53%. Just as Ken did, Dr. Bryan Acheampong has also conceded defeat, congratulated Dr. Bawumia and pledged his support for the campaign to get the NPP back into government.

It is significant to note that Dr. Bawumia’s commanding lead and win was reflected across the country.

Two other contenders, Dr. Yaw Adutwum and Kwabena Agyapong had some insignificant number votes not worth writing home about. The two have conceded defeat and pledged support for Dr. Bawumia.

It was a beautiful sight when all four contenders who lost out, joined Dr. Bawumia at the Party’s headquarters Saturday night to prove to their respective supporters that campaign season is over and all camps are dismantled and reintegrated into the elephant family as one NPP with a shared vision and common goal of winning election 2028 with Dr. Bawumia as the flag-bearer.

Speaking to NPP faithful moments after the results were announced, Dr. Bawumia expressed optimism that with a united front, the NPP would win the next presidential elections.

Dr. Bawumia noted:

“Political Parties are assemblies of like-minded people. Whilst we may believe that our ideas are the best, we should be prepared to accept that there might be other ideas that may serve the larger interest of the party. As it is often said, after competition comes cooperation, and it is our expectation that all party members will apply themselves to this principle. It cannot be the case that one’s support for the party is maintained only when those we support lead.

“I want to stand on this energy to make a passionate appeal to all members of the great NPP to let go of whatever reservations they have and come together. We need every idea, every voice, and every piece of advice to help preserve and project a proud tradition bequeathed to us by our forebears. Let it not be said anywhere on any day that the party of BJ Da Rocha, Peter Ala Adjetey, Odoi Sykes, JA Kufour, “Professor Mike Ocquaye, C.K. Tedam, JH Mensah, Aliu Mahama, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, among other great patriots, could not handle disagreements as natural ways of stating alternative positions. I have a duty to the delegates who stood by me, and to the delegates who found worthy ideas in my brothers who contested with me.

“My election today communicates a broad based appeal across the party, and I need to draw directly on that capital to unite the party as one of the crucial steps to winning power in 2028. I call on all to join in this bounden duty.”
