Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s decisive victory at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer primary held over the weekend reflects the overwhelming confidence the Party’s delegates have placed in his leadership and vision for Ghana’s future, Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin has said.
“His election represents a clear mandate from NPP delegates across all 276 constituencies, both at home and in the diaspora, to lead the party into the 2028 general elections….
“On behalf of the 87 Members of Parliament who constitute the Minority in Ghana’s Ninth Parliament, I commend Dr Bawumia for a campaign marked by vision, intellectual rigour and resolute commitment to Ghana’s progress”, Afenyo-Markin noted in a statement he signed on behalf of the Minority Caucus last Saturday January 31, 2026.
It noted further:
“The Minority Caucus, together with former NPP Members of Parliament who have served with distinction in Ghana’s democratic institutions, pledges its full support to Dr Bawumia. Our collective experience – having secured 169 seats in 2016 and 137 in 2020 and having delivered transformative policies including the Free Senior High School programme, significant infrastructure development, and digital economy initiatives, positions us to provide crucial strategic guidance as we prepare for 2028.
Our immediate task is clear: we must turn our attention outward to scrutinise the current NDC administration’s performance. Through our parliamentary work and public engagement, we shall hold the government accountable on critical matters affecting ordinary Ghanaians.
“These include the alarming depletion of Ghana’s gold reserves through questionable transactions; substantial financial losses stemming from bogus gold trading schemes involving state institutions such as the Minerals Commission and the Bank of Ghana; the evident failures in managing public transportation systems, leaving commuters in distress; the deterioration of Ghana’s international relations and standing amongst long-time development partners; the ineffective response to illegal mining (galamsey) which continues to poison our water bodies and destroy agricultural lands; and the government’s inability to create meaningful employment opportunities for Ghana’s youth, resulting in tragic incidents at military recruitment centres and widespread economic despair.
“To the people of Ghana, we declare that the NPP stands united, renewed, and prepared to offer the accountable governance, economic revival, and inclusive prosperity that our nation deserves.
“Under Dr Bawumia’s leadership, informed by the lessons of 2024, we are better positioned to serve Ghana’s interests and restore hope to all citizens.
“The Minority Caucus envisions a Ghana post 2028 where the Free SHS programme operates at optimal efficiency, where our economy generates widespread prosperity, and where our nation serves as a beacon of democratic governance and economic innovation across Africa. We are committed to making unity our anthem, development in freedom our goal, diligent work our instrument, and reconciliation our guiding principle.
“Dr Bawumia, on behalf of the Minority Caucus, we congratulate you once more on this well-deserved victory. The New Patriotic Party, both at home and abroad, looks to your leadership with confidence and expectation. Ghana awaits the restoration of visionary governance.”
