Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren says Ghana’s upcoming semi-final clash against host nation Morocco will be a very difficult match.
Ghana qualified for the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a thrilling 4-2 win on penalties against Algeria. Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan became the star of the match, saving two penalty kicks to help her team secure victory.
This is the first time in nine years that the Black Queens have reached the semi-finals of the WAFCON. It is also the eighth time in history that Ghana has reached this stage of the competition. However, the team is still chasing its first-ever WAFCON title.
To reach the final, Ghana will have to beat a strong Moroccan team. Morocco, who finished as runners-up in the previous tournament, are hoping to reach the final for the second time in a row.
Speaking after the win against Algeria, Coach Björkegren praised the players for their fighting spirit but also spoke about the challenge of preparing for the next game so soon.
“I wish we had one or two more days to recover,” he said. “That’s the life of a footballer and a coach. We now have to focus on mental and physical recovery and be ready for the semi-final.”
He added that the medical team will play a key role in helping the players regain strength before the next match.
The Black Queens will face Morocco on July 22, and the coach is counting on proper recovery and good tactics to secure a win.
Victory in the semi-final will take Ghana to the final and move them one step closer to their dream of winning their first WAFCON trophy.
