Black Queens Win WAFCON Bronze

Ghana’s Black Queens have won a bronze medal at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after beating South Africa 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout.

This is the team’s first medal since 2016, and they are thrilled with the hard-earned victory.

Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren made a key change in the lineup, replacing Princess Marfo with Alice Kusi. Ghana almost scored early in the match when Doris Boaduwaa missed a clear chance, shooting over the bar.

Alice Kusi also came close after a corner from Portia Boakye, but her shot missed by inches. Grace Asantewaa forced South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini to make a brilliant save, the first on-target effort of the game.

Just before halftime, a mistake by Ghana’s goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan allowed Nonhlanhla Mthandi to score for South Africa. Ghana returned in the second half determined, creating many chances but struggling to equalize. Substitute Evelyn Badu’s header from Princella Adubea’s cross narrowly missed the target.

Finally, in the 68th minute, Alice Kusi scored after connecting with a cross from Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, making it 1-1 and pushing the match to penalties.

During the shootout, Cynthia Konlan redeemed herself by saving two important penalties. Nancy Amoh scored the final and winning spot kick, giving Ghana a 4-3 win and the bronze medal. It was a proud moment for the team and their supporters.
