Boadu Is Back, Ex-General Secretary wins NPP National Chair

John Boadu was declared the New Patriotic Party’s National Chairman in the early hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026, after a gruelling congress at the Baba Yara Stadium that stretched through the night and into dawn.

The former General Secretary, who lost his re-election bid in 2022, staged a dramatic comeback to secure the party’s top organisational post with 2,888 votes, representing 47.19 per cent of valid ballots cast. His closest rival, Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, polled 2,408 votes (39.35 per cent), while former Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko, seeking a return after his 2015 suspension, managed 790 votes (12.90 per cent). Sammy Crabbe trailed with 41 votes (0.67 per cent).

John Boadu was sworn into office alongside other newly elected National Executive member. moments after the Electoral Commission declared the results. In his acceptance speech, he struck a conciliatory tone and warned against complacency.

“Political victory is never an entitlement,” John Boadu said. “It must be earned through service, organisation and credibility and the trust of the Ghanaian people. That is why our preparations begin now.”

The new Chairman extended an olive branch to his opponents, declaring: “There must be no winners and losers, only one NPP, united around one purpose.” He pledged to rebuild the party from the grassroots, strengthen constituency structures, empower the youth, support women, and engage traditional and religious leaders.

“Strong parties are not sustained by past achievements alone. They endure because they learn, renew themselves and respond courageously to a changing society,” John Boadu said, adding that the party must “embrace technology without abandoning the human relationships that have always sustained us.”

The congress also delivered a resounding endorsement for Justin Kodua Frimpong, who was re-elected General Secretary with 4,486 votes being the highest tally recorded by any contestant in the party’s 2026 national executive elections. His closest challenger, Sylvester Tetteh, polled 1,340 votes, while Eugene Boakye Antwi and Dr Charles Dwamena managed 162 and 129 votes respectively.

In the vice-chairmanship race, Kojo Fosu Boadu emerged first with 3,116 votes, followed by Henry Nana Boakye with 3,061 and Nana Akomea with 2,987.

Alfred Kwadwo Thompson won the National Treasurer position with 2,243 votes, beating Tahiru Issahaku Moomin (1,605), Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah (1,582) and Hajia Ahmed Ruka Saida (687).

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover secured the National Organiser post with 2,964 votes, while Ali Maiga Halidu followed with 2,231. Mavis Hawa Koomson won the National Women’s Organiser race with 783 votes against Safia Mohammed’s 429. Abanga Yakubu Fuseini took the National Youth Organiser position with 1,550 votes, and Mohammed Ali Suraj won the Nasara Organiser slot with 372 votes. Dennis Edward Miracles Aboagye was elected National Communications Director unopposed.

Addressing the new Executives and party faithful, Chairman Boadu said his leadership would prioritise consultation and inclusivity. He announced plans to work closely with regional and constituency executives, external branch members, Members of Parliament, the Minority led by Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, patrons, and voluntary groups including TESCON and social media practitioners.

“We will engage the business community and Ghanaian entrepreneurs with openness and respect, and continue to advance policies that expand opportunities and allow enterprise to flourish,” John Boadu said.

The new Chairman also committed to working with the party’s flagbearer and national leadership to strengthen the NPP’s organisational and financial foundation, particularly at the constituency level.

“We will serve the New Patriotic Party with humility, lead through consultation, and dedicate this mandate to the winning machinery of our great party,” John Boadu said. “Let us choose unity over division, service over personal interest.”
