Boxing Interim Committee Inauguration Set for Monday- Sport Ministry

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will inaugurate the newly formed Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC) on today Monday, 29th September 2025, at its conference room.

This comes after the dissolution of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) board last Friday.

Ahead of the inauguration, Sports Minister Kofi Adams met with members of the IMC, including legendary boxer Azumah Nelson. The meeting, led by the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, served as a prelude to the official event.

The establishment of the IMC follows the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on 29th March 2025. His passing prompted widespread calls for reforms in Ghana’s boxing administration.

In response, the Ministry set up an independent investigative committee chaired by retired statesman Amarkai Amarteifio. The committee presented a 100-page report highlighting the causes of the incident and recommending key measures to improve safety, professionalism, and discipline in Ghanaian boxing.

Addressing the IMC members, Minister Kofi Adams praised them for accepting the responsibility to guide the sport through this transitional period. He emphasized the urgency of reform, stating:

“This normalisation process is not about personalities; it is about the future of our sport. We are determined to restore boxing to a state of professionalism, safety and international respect.”

The Minister also stressed the importance of strict medical protocols, up-to-date health records for boxers, the formation of a Medical Commission, and stronger anti-doping measures in partnership with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

He urged the committee to act quickly and transparently, assuring the public that structured boxing events will return before the end of the year.

In addition, the Ministry has prepared a formal white paper outlining its position on the investigative report. The IMC is expected to implement these recommendations under close ministerial supervision.

The inauguration ceremony will take place at 1:00 PM on Monday at the Ministry’s Conference Room.
