Brogya Genfi holds Discussion on Armed Forces Operations in Tunis

Deputy Defence Minister, Ernest Brogya Genfi has reiterated a fundamental point that, soldiers at the war front showcase and outline courage that many in different professional duties would not be ready to exhibit.

He made this known at a high-level discussion with the National Defence Minister of Tunisia and the United Nations under Secretary General for Peace Operations on the role of Armed Forces in the Protection of Civilians in Peace Operations.

In a Facebook post, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) member stated that, he had a fruitful discussion with the National Defence Minister of Tunisia and the United Nations Under Secretary General for Peace Operations on the sidelines of Peace Operations.

“Moreover, I made the point that, while the loss of soldiers on the battlefield is a profound tragedy, we must acknowledge a fundamental truth: soldiers go to war with the full knowledge of its risks. Civilians, on the other hand, often awaken to war as victims—unarmed, unprepared, and unaware until it is upon them. Every civilian death reported while awaiting humanitarian relief is not just a statistic; it is a stark reminder of the gaps in peacekeeping operations—gaps that demand urgent action and reform” part of the post reads.

I was in Tunis last week to represent the Minister of Defence, Dr Omane Boamah at the United Nations Conference to discuss the Role of Armed Forces in the Protection of Civilians in Peace Operations.

In my speech, I recounted the famous remark by a former UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld that, “Peacekeeping is not a job for soldiers, but only soldiers can do it.”
