Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticised Mohamed Salah for his recent behaviour, accusing the forward of putting personal interests ahead of the club.
Carragher made the comments on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football while discussing Salah’s actions after Liverpool’s latest match.
Carragher said he was disappointed with how Salah handled himself after the game, stressing that his behaviour was not simply emotional but intentional.
“I thought it was a disgrace what he did after the game. Some people have painted it as an emotional outburst. I don’t think it was,” he said.
He went on to explain that Salah rarely stops to speak in the mixed zone, but when he does, it is usually planned.
“I think whenever Mo Salah stops in a mixed zone, which he’s done four times in eight years at Liverpool, it’s choreographed with him and his agent to cause maximum damage and strengthen his own position.”
Carragher added that Salah had done something similar a year ago.
“He did that 12 months ago and I called him out about it. He played on the heartstrings of Liverpool supporters. Liverpool were top of league, he’d just scored the winning goal at Southampton and that was time to come out and put pressure on the Liverpool ownership.
“For the rest of the season you had banners in the crowd saying ‘Give Mo his dough’.”
According to Carragher, Salah picked this moment on purpose, after a poor result, when morale was low.
“He’s chosen this weekend to do this now and has waited for a bad result for Liverpool, when the supporters and everyone involved in club feels like they are in the gutter. He’s chose that time to go for the manager and maybe he’s trying to get him sacked. That’s the way I felt about it.”
Carragher also criticised Salah for suggesting he had been mistreated.
“The ‘thrown under the bus’ line stands out to me. He’s tried to do that to the club twice in the last 12 months.”
He reminded Salah of the support he has received at Liverpool.
“He’s going after owners initially who have paid him hundreds of thousands of pounds over the last six years… With the manager right now, he should be trying to do as much as possible to get the club out of their worst run since the 1950s.”
Carragher also pointed out that Salah was not as successful before coming to Liverpool.
“I want to remind Salah and his agent that before he came to Liverpool he was known as the guy who failed at Chelsea… he has never won Afcon.”
Carragher ended by saying he respects Salah’s talent but wants him to remember the value of teamwork.
“You need help from team-mates, managers and fans. It is really important he remembers that. “In the mixed zone, all he’s about is me, me, me.”
