Civil Aviation Workers Demand Removal Of Board Chair

Staff of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority are demanding the immediate removal of their board chairman, Air Commodore Rexford G.M. Acquah (retd), who they have accused of unprofessionalism.

He is alleged to be working outside his mandate and micromanaging the Authority with disregard to the functions of management and staff.

A letter from the staff of the Authority to the Minister of Aviation dated January 23, claimed Air Commodore Acquah has “become abusive and abrasive in nature” towards top management the rank and tile of the Authority.

“[He] has had lots of run-in with members of staff,” the letter signed by the leaders of the Local Divisional Union and all other professional Associations of the Authority claimed.

“His continuous unilateral imposition of his dictates and interference in the day-to-day operations of the Authority as well as his unwarranted habit of threatening Management and staff over internal administrative matters have become unbearable,” they alleged.

They claimed the chairman’s interference in the day-to-day running of the Authority is so much that he even controls the processes of interviews for vacant positions and also sits in as part of the panel.

Also, the staff are claiming Air Commodore Acquah “has an insatiable desire for the use of Authority assets,” noting he has a dedicated vehicle at his disposal and the Authority has had to buy two units of air conditioners for him.

According to the leadership of the local union and the staff, they are obliged to help build, grow and ensure the stability of the Authority in particular and the industry in general, but indicated the actions of the board chairman “are not in sync with the tenets of the Authority”.

“In essence, we have agreed that we can no longer work with him and he must be removed immediately,” the staff demanded.
