Concerned Nursing Trainees Group Demand Outstanding Allowance

Some members of the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Trainees Association (GNMTA), are unhappy with the government over delays in the payment of some outstanding allowances.

According to them, the situation is affecting their studies because they are indebted to their respective schools.

Speaking to Citi News, spokesperson for the affected trainees, Emmanuel Dawani, said the government must urgently release the allowances to salvage their plight.

“Government has not been able to pay us our 2015 allowance, it is causing a lot of hardship on our studies. When our allowances were paid last year [2017], we were able to use the allowance to pay part of our school fees,” he said.

He also noted that the delay in allowance had prevented their seniors from completing their project work, case study, as some students still owe the school.

“We want the government to pay us the 2015 allowance because we are really struggling,” he added.

The restoration of allowances for trainee nurses and teachers was a significant campaign promise in the 2016 elections after the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Mahama government had scrapped the allowances asking students to take loans from the loan trust.

The Nana Addo government restored the allowances of GH¢400, effective September 2017.
