The body of a 67-year-old woman, who was buried just three weeks ago, has been stolen from her grave at the Adevukope Cemetery in the Ketu North Municipality after suspected grave robbers allegedly broke into the burial ground, leaving two graves damaged.
Residents of Adevukope were left shocked after the news of this disturbing incident broke out.
The Assembly Member for the Adevukope Electoral Area, Johnson Dotsey Mensah, swiftly reported the startling incident to the Weta Police Station on June 10, 2026.
Reports indicated that he received information earlier that morning, around 6:30 a.m., that unknown persons had invaded the Adevukope Cemetery and damaged the graves of two recently buried residents.
The affected graves belonged to late Esi Havor Deku, age 67, and Akakpo Agbobli, age 93, who were buried three weeks and one month ago respectively.
According to reports, the suspects allegedly exhumed and took away the remains of Madam Deku. However, they were unable to remove the body of Mr. Agbobli.
The District Crime Officer, ASP Emmanuel Habada, later accompanied the complainant to the cemetery, which is located a few metres from the Adevukope community, to assess the situation.
At the scene, investigators found Madam Deku’s grave badly damaged. Her coffin had been opened and her body was missing. Pieces of cloth believed to belong to the deceased were found near the grave, adding to the painful sight.
The grave of Mr. Agbobli had also been tampered with, but his coffin remained intact and his body was not removed.
Police have since launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and uncover the motive behind the shocking incident, which has left many residents worried and saddened.
