Crystal Palace Chase City Defender Akanji

Crystal Palace have shown interest in signing Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji.

Although Palace have not yet made an official bid, sources told BBC Sport that the London club have asked about the availability of the Swiss international.

City are believed to want around £15 million for Akanji, who has not played in either of their Premier League games this season. The 30-year-old is also attracting interest from Turkish champions Galatasaray.

Akanji joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and quickly became an important figure. He helped the team win the Treble in 2023 and even started in the Champions League final against Inter Milan.

City manager Pep Guardiola has already spent over £150 million on six new players this summer. Earlier this month, he made it clear that the club would now focus on player exits. Guardiola explained that it is “not healthy” to have too many players in the squad, adding that the club and agents are working together to find solutions for those who might leave.

One of the players strongly linked with an exit is goalkeeper Ederson, who is being monitored by Galatasaray. Tottenham Hotspur are also in talks to sign City winger Savinho. The transfer window closes on Monday at 19:00 BST, so decisions will have to be made quickly.

City currently have four senior goalkeepers. Summer signing James Trafford has started both league games, but his performance in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham was unconvincing. Ederson was on the bench for that game, but there is still no agreement between City and Galatasaray over his future.

Reports suggested that Ederson’s exit could open the door for City to sign Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain. However, City sources have denied that any personal terms have been agreed with the player.

Meanwhile, German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega is expected to leave before the deadline, though no move is close at the moment.

In midfield, Ilkay Gundogan was left out of the Tottenham game for tactical reasons, and City are open to hearing offers for the 34-year-old. Guardiola also confirmed that Savinho, who is wanted by Spurs, is currently injured.

Although there were talks earlier in the transfer window, City are reluctant to sell and would only consider a very big offer.

As the deadline approaches, City are facing several transfer decisions.
