Daddy Lumba’s family has filed a lawsuit against Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu over his handling of the late musician’s funeral and memorial funds.
According to report from Ghanaweb, the family is accusing him of excluding them from decisions regarding the late musician’s funeral and of mishandling funds meant for his memorial.
The plaintiffs, Obaapanin Afia Adomah, Robert Gyamfi (Wofa Yaw Poku), Georgina Gyamfi, Ernestina Fosuh, and Nana Afia Kobi, have filed a petition in court seeking an interlocutory injunction to temporarily halt preparations for Daddy Lumba’s funeral. They want to ensure that all decisions are made transparently and with their input.
Court documents reveal that the family claims Kofi Owusu, who heads the Ekuona Royal Family of Nsuta and Parkoso, “unilaterally formed a funeral committee without consulting them” after Daddy Lumba’s passing. The plaintiffs add that they “only became aware of several major decisions after they had already been made,” leaving them frustrated and sidelined.
The dispute reportedly became serious enough for the family to involve the Manhyia Palace. According to the documents, the Palace advised the respondent to “cease making unilateral decisions regarding the funeral and to work in collaboration with the immediate family.”
The family’s concerns extend beyond the funeral arrangements. They accuse Kofi Owusu of withdrawing money from a memorial account without their permission. They state that all donations collected during the one-week celebration at Independence Square were deposited into a CAL Bank account under the name “Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation LBG”, but claim they were “neither consulted nor informed about subsequent transactions.”
The lawsuit is intended to safeguard transparency in the planning of Daddy Lumba’s final rites and to ensure proper management of all funds related to his memorial activities. The case is ongoing, and the court is expected to rule on the request for an injunction as proceedings continue.
