Digitization Crucial to Modernization of Ghana Post

The Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has observed that the implementation of the digital property addressing system has brought efficiency to the service delivery of Ghana Post.

According to her, this has made it easier for last mile delivery of mails and parcels in the country.

Speaking at the launch of the first ever West African Postal Conference (WAPCO) on Wednesday, she said her Ministry is working to transform more postal service operations across the region.

“We will continue with the crystallization effort. The postal service is at a crossroad and it is our collective duty to explore how we can transform more operations across the region by maximizing the opportunities that digitalization offers,” she said.

It would be recalled that President Akufo-Addo in October last year, launched the National property addressing system as part of initiative to formulize the economy.

The system automatically generates location addresses and has a navigation capability.

Ghana Post, the company responsible for postal services in the country, was fortunate to be a custodian of the system.

Ursula Ekuful at the launch of the WAPCO stated that government recognizes postal infrastructure as essential for economic and social development, and important for building an effective and sustainable coastal network which offers an affordable and competitive services and products.

The Managing Director of the Ghana Post, James Kwofie, on his part indicated that Ghana Post is ready to take Ghana to the rest of Africa and the world through its e-commerce platform that will soon be launched.

According to him, local retailers, through this platform will be able to access the global market.

Mr. James Kwofie noted that the Ghana Post is now the most reliable channel of delivering letters and has improved in efficiencies in the delivery systems.

“We can deliver one touch and we do not have to keep looking for various directions before we find the customer,” he stressed.

The WAPCO is a conference for postal administrators comprising 15 of the ECOWAS countries as well as representatives from the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and Pan African Postal Union (PAPU), comprising countries such as Morocco, France, and Switzerland.

It is being held on the theme: “Enhancing regional integration through digitization; the role of the Posts”.

The aim is to build a single West African postal area with harmonized policy and strategies that will ensure, maintain and enhance cooperation among member states for improved postal services through their mutual relations.
