Black Stars defender Baba Rahman has strongly criticized the poor state of football pitches in Ghana, calling it a “national disgrace” and urging leaders to fix the problem immediately.
The PAOK left-back spoke out after the 2025 MTN FA Cup final at the University of Ghana Stadium, where the bad pitch conditions drew heavy public criticism. Many fans and football lovers expressed disappointment, calling the surface unfit for a major final.
Ghana’s poor pitches have long been a concern. In fact, last year the Confederation of African Football (CAF) banned the use of some stadiums in the country due to bad pitch conditions. The ban was later lifted, but the problems remain.
In an interview with Joy Sports, the former Chelsea player made a passionate appeal to football authorities.
“This is a serious issue that needs urgent attention,” he said.
“I’m pleading with those in charge, let’s at least ensure the national team has a proper pitch to play on. Sometimes it’s really embarrassing,” he stated.
Rahman also said the bad pitches hurt Ghana’s image in international football.
“You go back to your club after international duty, and your teammates mock the country because of the pitches we play on. It’s honestly a national disgrace,” he lamented.
He admitted that Ghana’s weather can make it hard to maintain pitches but believes the country must try harder.
“I understand the weather makes pitch maintenance difficult, but we still need to make the effort. Improving our pitches will benefit all our national teams, from the juniors to the women’s sides,” he added.
