Dominic Frimpong Dies After Robbery Attack on Berekum Chelsea Bus

Berekum Chelsea have confirmed the death of their forward Dominic Frimpong after an armed robbery attack on the club’s team bus on Sunday evening, April 12, 2026.

The club said the incident happened while the team were returning to Berekum after their Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 game against FC Samartex 1996 at DUN’s Park. Berekum Chelsea lost the match 1-0.

According to the club, the team bus was attacked on the Bibiani–Goaso road near Ahyiresu. Armed men reportedly blocked the road and forced the bus to stop. Players and officials were then ordered to leave the vehicle. In fear for their lives, many of them ran into nearby bushes to escape the attackers.

During the attack, several members of the team suffered injuries as chaos broke out. Unfortunately, 20-year-old forward Dominic Frimpong was shot in the head during the incident. He was quickly rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, but medical staff later confirmed him dead on arrival.

Berekum Chelsea described the incident as devastating and confirmed that Frimpong was the only confirmed fatality from the attack. The club also said some players went missing briefly during the confusion as they scattered into the bush to avoid gunfire.

The Ghana Police Service has since launched a manhunt for the armed men behind the attack. Security officers are also working to trace and rescue any missing players and officials who were separated during the incident. Investigations are ongoing as authorities try to establish the full details of the attack and bring the suspects to justice.

A day after the tragedy, on Monday, April 13, 2026, surviving players of Berekum Chelsea returned safely to their base in Berekum. A video circulating on social media showed the team arriving in a bus provided by Bibiani Gold Stars after their original vehicle was damaged during the attack.

The players looked deeply shaken as they stepped off the bus. Some were seen walking slowly with injuries, while others appeared silent and emotional. Their expressions reflected the trauma they experienced just hours earlier.

The loss of Frimpong has sent shockwaves through Ghana football. The young striker had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January 2026. His loan deal was expected to run until the end of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season. Before his death, he had scored two goals in 13 appearances for the club.

International football leaders have also reacted to the tragedy. Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, expressed deep sadness over the incident. He sent condolences to Frimpong’s family, teammates, and the entire Berekum Chelsea club. He described the young player’s death as heartbreaking and a great loss to football.

Frimpong’s death has raised serious concern about player safety and road security for football teams traveling across the country for league matches. Fans, clubs, and football authorities are calling for stronger protection measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
