Ex-Footballer Stoned to Death by Angry Mob

A former Kenyan footballer, Eric Wafula, has died after being attacked by a mob in Nairobi.

Wafula, who once played as a goalkeeper for Mathare FC, was reportedly accused of stealing a mobile phone over the weekend.

According to news reports, Wafula and a friend were said to have snatched a phone from a passerby. An angry crowd chased them down and beat them with stones and sticks. Both men died at the scene.

This was not the first time Wafula had faced such accusations. AfricaSoccer reports that he was previously involved in a similar case in Kariobangi, where he was nearly attacked. On that occasion, the police arrived in time to rescue him.

His former club, FKF New Mathare FC, expressed sorrow over his death. In a short statement, the club said,

“We are saddened by the passing of our former goalkeeper Eric Wafula. Shine on your way Jagoal. Rest in Peace.”

A police officer from John Saga Police Station spoke to the media, saying Wafula’s reputation as a footballer had protected him before, but not this time.

“The fame that came with his talent saved his life on several occasions. All I can say is he was a talented goalkeeper; it is sad that his life was to end in such a manner,” the officer said.

The incident has once again raised concerns about mob justice in Kenya. Many communities continue to take the law into their own hands instead of reporting suspects to the police.

Wafula’s death has shocked the football community and highlighted the dangers of quick, unproven accusations. His tragic end serves as a painful reminder of the need for law and order to be respected.
