Excitement Over Sosu’s Nomination To General Legal Council …Promises To Reset

Human Rights lawyer and Member of Parliament for Madina constituency, Hon. Francis Xavier-Sosu; Mrs. Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee, Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law; and Dr. Abdul-Bassit Aziz Bamba, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana have been nominated to serve on Ghana’s General Legal Council.

The nomination was made by Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine and made in accordance with Section 1(2) of the Legal Profession Act, 1960, and Paragraph 2(1)(d) of the First Schedule of the Act.

The nominations reflect a blend of legal expertise and parliamentary representation, with Xavier-Sosu being a renowned human rights lawyer and MP, Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee serving as a law lecturer, and Dr. Abdul-Bassit Aziz Bamba bringing his experience as a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana.

The three experts in law practice and education were chosen to contribute their expertise to the Council, which plays a crucial role in overseeing legal education and professional conduct in the country.

In an official communique addressed to the Honourable Lady Chief Justice and signed by Dr. Ayine, he stated, “I write to nominate the following persons to the General Legal Council: Honourable Francis Xavier-Sosu, MP for Madina; Mrs. Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee, Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law; and Dr. Abdul-Bassit Aziz Bamba, Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana”.

Dr. Ayine further assured that the nomination had been duly communicated to the President. “His Excellency the President has been duly informed of the nomination of the three persons named above.”

In response, Sosu assured President Mahama and the Attorney General of his commitment to see a reset of legal education and practice in Ghana.

“I am grateful to the President John Dramani Mahama and the AG and humbly accept this nomination and promise to work with other Council members and relevant stakeholders to achieve the reset agenda of the President,” he stated in a Facebook post.

He emphasized the need for the reforms for the General Legal Council, which was set up in 1960 by the Legal Profession Act and indicated that he will work together with stakeholders to reset the system.

“Set up in 1960 by The Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), the GLC needs serious progressive reforms.”

I wish to thank the Learned Attorney General of the Republic of Ghana, Hon. Dr. Dominic Ayine for Nominating me to the General Legal Council.

The General Legal Council, which regulates the legal profession in Ghana by overseeing legal education and professional practice of the law, plays a key role in effective and quality justice delivery.

Set up in 1960 by The Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), the GLC needs serious progressive reforms.

I am grateful to the President John Dramani Mahama and the AG and humbly accept this normination and promise to work with other Council members and relevant stakeholders to achieve the reset agenda of the President.

Let’s work together to reform and reset legal education and practice in Ghana to guarantee justice for all and injustice to none.
