A District Court in Accra has sentenced 21-year-old Mohammed Huzeinu to 100 days in prison for running onto the pitch during Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025.
The incident happened when Huzeinu ran onto the field, seemingly trying to hug Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo. Security officers acted quickly, removing him from the pitch. He was later arrested and taken to the Ministries Police Station before being put on trial.
His actions disrupted the match and could lead to a fine for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), as international football bodies often charge at least $10,000 for security violations.
The GFA has once again warned against pitch invasions, stressing the need for discipline and respect for match-day rules.
This is the fifth time in five years that a fan has invaded the pitch during a Black Stars match, raising concerns about stadium security. Similar incidents happened during Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers against Angola and South Africa, which resulted in financial penalties.
Officials hope that Huzeinu’s punishment will discourage others from doing the same, helping to maintain order and protect Ghana’s image in international football.
