The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has begun investigations to ascertain claims made in a video circulating on social media that “plastic fish” are being sold at the Mallam Atta Market in Accra.
The FDA said it “had earlier received similar complaints of some fish after which investigations conducted indicated that they were genuine fish and not plastic”.
The FDA explained that “the ‘plastic nature’ of the said investigated fish is noted to be a characteristic of the fish”, nonetheless, they are investigating the matter.
This was contained in a statement signed by FDA CEO, Delese A. Darko. which was released on Friday, 27 April 2018.
The authority also advised the public to verify with the FDA before going ahead to circulate such information, “since, many of such information have turned out to be false after investigations” and “rather create fear and panic”.
The FDA said it can be contacted on hotlines 0299802932 or 0299802933 and also on WhatsApp number 0206973065. The authority also has a toll free number 08001511000 and SMS shortcode 4015.
