FDA Intercepts Buses with Drugs

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Volta Region has intercepted two KIA buses loaded with drugs at Sogakofe border.

The buses, with registration numbers GT 4936 18 and GT 4503 17 were transporting the drugs worth GHC100,000.00 from Nigeria through Aflao to Kumasi.

Mr. Gorden Akurugu, Volta Regional Director of FDA said his outfit had mounted road blocks at vantage points where buses usually ply and picked intelligence on the movement of the two buses leading to the arrest.

He said assorted drugs including diclofenac and antibiotics were found in the buses in large quantities.

The Director said the buses were transiting the drugs through unapproved routes into the country because the Kotoka International Airport and the Tema Port were the only ways through which drugs or medicines could enter the country.

Mr. Akurugu said the confiscated drugs had no permit from the FDA and that the owners also failed to pay tax on the goods because of the usage of unapproved routes.
