FIFA, GFA Back Antoine Semenyo After Racist Attack

FIFA as well as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo during Bournemouth’s Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

The incident which took place on Friday, August 15, 2025, happened in the 28th minute when Semenyo alerted referee Anthony Taylor to the abuse from a supporter. The match was briefly stopped as officials discussed the matter with both managers. Security officers, working with local police, quickly identified and removed the suspect from the stadium.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino released a powerful statement after the incident. He described the abuse as “absolutely unacceptable” and praised Semenyo’s courage for continuing to play despite the situation. Infantino stressed that football has no room for racism or any type of discrimination.

“Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination. Antoine’s courage and performance on the pitch, despite such adversity, is a powerful example of strength and dignity for players worldwide,” Infantino said.

Infantino also pointed to FIFA’s measures against racism, especially the “Players’ Voice Panel,” which was created in 2024 as part of its five-pillar plan. According to him, this body will stay in close contact with Semenyo and continue to monitor cases of abuse. He assured that FIFA would work with clubs, leagues, and authorities to ensure strong actions are taken against offenders.

“Everyone at FIFA, The Players’ Voice Panel, and the whole football community stands firmly with Antoine. We will continue to offer our full support to him, Bournemouth, the Premier League and The FA to make sure racism and discrimination are eradicated from the game,” Infantino added.

Local authorities also confirmed action against the suspected offender. Merseyside Police reported that a 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, the match commander, declared that hate crime will not be tolerated in any form. He further stated that banning orders would be sought against anyone found guilty of such acts.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) also joined in support of Semenyo. In a statement on Instagram, the GFA praised his maturity and bravery both on and off the pitch.

“We stand firmly with our Black Stars forward, Antoine Semenyo, following the racial abuse he suffered at Anfield. In the face of provocation, Antoine showed strength, grace, and unity. On the pitch, he scored twice; off it, he reminded us of what football truly represents, respect, solidarity, and love for the beautiful game. We are proud of you, Antoine. We stand with you,” the GFA said

Despite the disturbing event, the 24-year-old displayed remarkable professionalism. He scored two goals to bring Bournemouth level before Liverpool sealed a 4-2 victory with late strikes from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah.
