Fifi Kwetey Goes Hard On Appointees Who Want Party Positions In Addition

Any person or persons in this current National Democratic Congress government led by President Mahama who finds it difficult to understand the decision by party leadership instructing some government appointees to resign at least six months before contesting in internal party elections is greedy, outspoken NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has said.

“If you start having too many people, who only focus on working for the party is on what they will get, you are not really a party member, you are getting almost mercenaries, total mercenaries. I’m only doing this because of what I would benefit, it means if the benefit is not there, I’m not going to be there, then you do not belong to this party. The party has borne this decision that resign six months ahead if you want party leadership and if you do not understand, your decision amount to greed and I repeat, it’s just about greed” he noted on Joy News’ PM Express hosted by Evans Mensah.

He explained, the decision taken by the National Executive Committee in line with the party’s constitution and newly approved election guidelines is intended to ensure that leadership opportunities are distributed fairly within the party.

He clarified weeks ago during the announcement that Chairpersons and Members of Boards, or those in analogous positions, are exempted because they are not considered full-time employees.

The categories of officials expected to step down include Ministers and Deputy Ministers, Chief Executive Officers, Managing Directors and their Deputies, as well as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Making his point clear on PM Express last Monday, Mr. Kwetey indicated that, the NDC is a major political body with millions of followers and a vast pool of competent people, so it’s critical to prevent a situation in which a small number of people control both elected party posts and government appointments.

“NDC is a big party, with millions of supporters; it’s a party that has so many people capable of holding position. So if you have someone who, at the moment, has been given a position of responsibility, it simply makes a lot of sense to want to ensure that others are given the opportunity to hold other positions as well.

“Now, if you want to compete for a position where you already have one, especially a key appointment… some of the categories tend to be pretty engaging. I mean, like full-time responsibility at the highest level, where you are in charge of entities, whether at the ministerial level, or at the CEO level, or the district or municipal metropolitan level, those are very engaging positions.

He continued, “And if you still want to have that and also hold what you call an elective position at the party level, we simply want to say that you can’t really, really even run the two very efficiently. Because, as you appreciate, when you move into such positions, it’s virtually like 24/7, you are very engaged”.
