Find Solutions To Light Fishing – Journos Told

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La, has challenged journalists in the area to help seek answers to the recurrent light fishing phenomenon that has bedevilled the fishing industry.

Despite efforts by successive governments to deal with the menace the illegal practice is rampant among fishermen in the area.

The MCE indicated in an interview with Class FM’s Ibrahim Obeng-Mensah that oil exploration activities on Ghana’s territorial waters have contributed to the loss of fishes.

He argued that most of the fishermen cannot cast their net to catch fishes without the aid of light to attract the fishes hence their continuous decline to heed to instructions of staying away from illegal fishing.

He added that the inability of authorities to clamp down on the practice have emboldened fishermen to illegally embark on light fishing on large scale at the expense of others leading to depletion of Ghana’s fish stock.

The worried MCE therefore called on the media and other civil society groups to help end the practice to save the nation’s fish stock.
