A major fire broke out behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, destroying more than 50 mobile phone shops, authorities and eyewitnesses have reported.
The fire, which started around 10 a.m., prompted a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service, which was able to bring the situation under control.
Details about the exact cause of the blaze, the extent of the damage, and whether there are any injuries remain unclear. Some shop owners at the scene, however, suggested the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Klotey Korle Municipal Assembly are at the scene assessing the situation and coordinating relief efforts.
Residents and motorists in the area have been advised to exercise caution and avoid the vicinity until the situation is fully stabilised.
