Fire Destroys Accra Tourist Centre; Rockz Waakye Affected, NFA Goes Remote

A fire broke out at the Accra Tourist Information Centre in the early hours of Monday, August 4, 2025, destroying parts of the building and affecting several businesses, including Reggie Rockstone’s popular eatery, Rockz Waakye, and the offices of the National Film Authority (NFA).

Veteran musician Reggie Rockstone, who owns Rockz Waakye, responded emotionally to the news in a video message.

“Yes, there has been a fire, a pretty devastating one. But the good news is, no human being was harmed. Amen. Material stuff we don’t take with us when we check out, so we give thanks,” he said

He thanked fans and well-wishers for their love and support and praised the Ghana Fire Service for their efforts, despite public criticism about how close the fire station was to the scene.

The National Film Authority also released a public notice confirming the damage to its offices. They assured stakeholders that their work would continue without interruption and announced temporary measures.

They urged anyone needing film-related services to contact them through email and visit their website for updates. The NFA will now operate remotely while looking for a new office.

“The NFA will continue to operate remotely as we work towards securing a new physical office location. We wish to assure all stakeholders that the National Film Authority remains committed to delivering on its mandate, and are taking every necessary measure to restore normalcy as swiftly as possible,” the statement said.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received an alert at exactly 1:02 a.m. and arrived at the scene two minutes later. Strong winds caused the fire to spread quickly in different directions.

Five additional fire trucks from Flagstaff House, Circle, Accra City, and Ministries fire stations were called in, along with a Rapid Intervention Vehicle from GNFS Headquarters.

According to GNFS, they managed to bring the blaze under control by 3:32 a.m., and complete extinguishing efforts lasted until 6:35 a.m. While the entire first floor and its contents were destroyed, the ground floor, including eight offices and the East Wing, was saved. Thankfully, no injuries or deaths were reported.

The fire at the Tourist Information Centre happened just hours after another blaze at Madina Ritz Junction, where more than 50 wooden and metal structures were destroyed, leaving dozens of residents homeless. That fire reportedly started at a washing bay.

Reggie also used the moment to warn the public against false rumours and prank calls, especially those traced to Madina. He described such acts as wrong and unhelpful.

Despite the destruction, Reggie promised that Rockz Waakye would return.

“Rockz Waakye is still here. We will carry on. We’ll be back soon, we don’t know exactly when, but we will,” he assured.
