Former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has announced his intention to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat ahead of the upcoming by-election.
The announcement follows the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama. Baba Jamal made his intention known in a video shared on the X page of Ghana Chronicles on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. In the video, he confirmed his readiness to contest the by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026, and appealed to party delegates and residents to support his bid.
“I am here this morning to officially announce to each and every one of our constituency that in the coming by-election, Baba Jamal will be contesting and to seek your mandate to represent you in Parliament,” he said.
Baba Jamal stated that he has worked closely with people in the Ayawaso East constituency over the years and believes the time has come for a new direction. He said the constituency needs unity and a fresh approach to improve its image and development.
“This is the time we need to change the narrative in Ayawaso East. We need to come together and give ourselves a different image as a people,” he stated.
He described his decision to contest the seat as a sacrifice aimed at transforming the constituency. Baba Jamal stressed the importance of working closely with party delegates, community leaders, and residents to achieve this goal.
“I believe together with you, especially the delegates who hold the future of Ayawaso East in your hands, we can change the narrative,” he said, assuring constituents of inclusive leadership and cooperation.
He also called for what he described as an “orientation change” to help reshape the mindset of residents and promote development in the area. Baba Jamal expressed appreciation to religious leaders, traditional authorities, party executives, delegates, and residents for their continued support, urging them to rally behind his bid.
Baba Jamal previously contested the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East. In that contest, the late Naser Toure Mahama won with 675 votes, while Baba Jamal obtained 525 votes.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
