Francis Abu Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup

Ghana midfielder Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a serious injury during the Black Stars’ friendly match against Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.

The surgery was performed at the Toyota Memorial Hospital in Japan, and doctors have confirmed that the first phase of his rehabilitation has already started.

According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Abu fractured two bones during the second half of the game, which Ghana lost 2–0. The incident forced the 24-year-old to be stretchered off the field. The GFA said the operation went well, thanks to the combined efforts of Dr Prince Pambo, Head of Medical for the Black Stars, medical staff from Toulouse FC, and the Japanese surgical team.

To support Abu’s recovery, the GFA, the Black Stars management, and the technical team have agreed that one physiotherapist will stay with him throughout this intensive, early part of his rehabilitation. There are also plans for a senior technical team member to accompany him back to France once he is discharged from the hospital. The Association expressed gratitude to everyone who helped during the difficult period and said they will continue supporting Abu until he returns to full fitness.

Meanwhile, Abu’s club, Toulouse FC, has announced that the midfielder will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. The club explained that although the tournament is seven months away, the injury is severe, and Abu will need several months to recover.

In a statement, Toulouse FC described the incident as “images we hate to see” and confirmed that Abu’s season has ended prematurely.

“Our midfielder will be sidelined for several months and will, unfortunately, miss the 2026 World Cup. Very sad news indeed,” the club said. They added a message of encouragement: “The entire club wishes you a speedy recovery, Abu. Stay strong and come back to us soon.”

Abu has now been officially released from the Ghana camp in Asia and will continue his long-term medical treatment in France as he focuses on returning stronger.
